Verizon Workers Rescue Child Who Fell into Sewer
A 10-year-old boy suffered cuts to his right leg when he was talking down the street in Brooklyn and suddenly fell into an open manhole. The manhole was not surrounded with any barriers and the lid was off. The child tumbled downwards 20 feet into the Brooklyn sewer system and was up to his ankles in water when he called for help. Two men who worked for Verizon were nearby, and were able to rush to the child’s aid and help him to get out of the manhole.
The child was rushed to the hospital where he received stitches for the cuts on his right leg. He also suffered significant bruising in the incident. The Verizon workers say that the child was relatively calm as the workers tried to help pull him out of the sewer. The child was clinging to a ladder at the time of the incident.
The Verizon workers say it was a good thing that it was not raining at the time of the incident, or the child may have been swept away. The child’s family is thrilled that he pulled through the accident with so few injuries. His father is grateful to the Verizon workers who were willing to stop doing their job to come and help the child. The father calls the rescue a miracle, but says he is still curious as to how the child fell through the opening in the first place.
The child claims that he was just walking to school and did not notice the manhole. He tripped on the opening and fell in, plummeting the length of a two story building. Investigators are still trying to determine if the steel cover gave way when the child stepped on it or if the hole had already been opened by a passing car. The lid allegedly broke into small pieces that ended up in the sewer.
The city is responsible to cover all manholes when they are not being worked on. When they are being worked on, workers are required to create barriers that notify pedestrians of the opening.
