Tablets and Smartphones Carry More Germs Than a Toilet Seat

According to a new study, tablets and smartphones carry more germs than a toilet seat. They are contaminated with more dangerous, disease-causing germs than a toilet seat in a public restroom. This is because many people fail to wash their hands before using the touchscreen products. Also, others take them unto the bathroom on a regular basis, continuing to contaminate the device with dangerous germs.

One study involved taking swabs from 90 devices. The scientists learned that there were hazardous levels of bacteria that can make a person sick on the devices, including the presence of E. coli. One iPad that was tested had 600 units of Staphyloccus aureaus, and a smartphone had 140 units. The dirtiest keyboard has as many as 480 units breeding on the keys. A head researcher says that any count of up to 600 units on a plastic device is excessively high.

If you use a device that is not properly cleaned, despite communal use, and you get sick, then you may be able to seek compensation from a responsible party. For example, at many fast food restaurants nowadays, individuals take orders on iPads. If you are constantly told to use the iPad but then get sick because it is never decontaminated, then you may be able to seek worker’s compensation if you fall severely ill.

In the meantime, make sure to clean off all of your digital devices and make a point to wash your hands after using the restroom before going back to a keyboard or touching a smartphone. If you suffer a severe illness following contact with a digital device, then you may want to talk to a New York City personal injury attorney at Greenberg & Stein for more information.
