Queens Driver Kills Pedestrians

A driver from Queens, New York was traveling down Queens Boulevard this Monday when he hit two men. The 22-year-old driver was allegedly speeding and was not watching ahead when he plowed into a 58-year-old man and a 41-year-old man. Both victims died shortly after the accident. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead after failed treatments. The driver of the car remained at the scene of the collision. Police are now investigating the crash.

This is evidence of a devastating pedestrian incident and is one of many that take place in the New York City area every year. In fact, 52% if all traffic fatalities between 2005 and 2009 were pedestrian accidents. 35% of all pedestrian accidents studied during that time occurred because the driver was not paying attention, and 27% of all pedestrian accidents happened when a driver failed to yield. Studies show that pedestrian-vehicle crashes involving unsafe speeds are twice as deadly as other crashes. Amd serious pedestrian crashes are about two-thirds more deadly if they take place on major street corridors rather than on smaller, local streets.
