Rikers inmate to sue after knife attack as Correction Dept. faces spike in lawsuits
Former Rikers Island inmate Joel Cruz begged jail bosses to move him into a protective custody cell due to his brother’s alleged gang ties. The 25-year-old’s plea was ignored, records show.
Inside a general population intake cell less than 24 hours after his arrest for petty larceny, Cruz was stabbed in the neck and face by another inmate on May 17.

Doctors needed 80 stitches to close the wounds.
Now, Cruz, a Bronx resident, plans to sue the city Correction Department for failing to adequately protect him inside the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers Island.
