Boat Capsizes Killing Four Off Florida Coast

Eleven survivors have been taken into custody after an incident where a boat capsizes killing four off the coast of Florida early on Wednesday morning. The Coast Guard unloaded four bodies off of the vessel, all women who passed away in the incident. Many of the individuals that were on the boat were from Haiti and Jamaica, and may have been a part of a human smuggling operation. The Coast Guard says that they heard about the incident when one of the survivors called 911 to report that the small vessel had capsized. The survivors were clinging to the hull of the boat, or had found their way into open air pockets.

One survivor was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries before being released. The rest of the survivors were in good condition and taken immediately into custody aboard a Coast Guard vessel. Investigators are trying to determine whether their suspicions about the human trafficking operation are correct. It is not immediately clear whether the individuals will be brought into the U.S. for investigation or if they will be sent back to their countries of origin.

The boat that was carrying the victims was missing its center console and was overloaded. It also lacked lifejackets for the occupants.
