37 Individuals File Claims After Ferry Accident
Back in January, individuals were tossed about when a ferry owned and operated by SeaStreak LLC hit Pier 11. At least 83 passengers on the boat were taken to the hospital with various injuries. The accident occurred on January 9th, and since that time at least 37 victims have filed lawsuits with the U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey. Many of the plaintiffs are commuters who used to take the ferry to work every day. The boat started at a port in New Jersey and ferried passengers up to a dock near Manhattan.
Plaintiffs report that they have suffered a variety of injuries from broken bones to lacerations to post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The captain of the ferry claims that he could not control the engines and this is why the boat rammed into the dock when it was just approaching its destination back in January. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating these claims by doing a full inspection of the boat.
If the NTSB learns that the engines gave out, they will then inspect the company to learn whether or not they are taking care of their vessels. Negligence to inspect or a failure to maintain the boats would prove that SeaStreak is responsible to cover the costs of all injuries after the boating accident.
